  • Arrival of the Sii
The long fall had finally brought the ship to the surface of a raging polar sea. The span of enforced silence, isolation and a worrisome attendant had been a burden, but this now was set aside. Transfixed, the old pilot paused the heavy craft's descent, to witness a dark ocean throwing itself against an immense ice shelf. This was some unconstrained nature not seen before, something only imagined in youth, of things long planed away, preserved only dimly in the ancient mythologies of home worlds.

  • Outrage and Ablation
The contempt appeared with time. The Sii's studious attendant had presented a thorough study of the predation. The old warrior, given over to naturalist tendencies, had grown fond of its studied pod, and now, with the approach of an industrial hunter ship, intent on slaughter, the matter of the directive was resolved. It did not form the thought that it might act where the great animals could not, but rather settled, clear of conflict now, into the small pit of its auxiliary fighter, sealed the blister, powered on, opened weapons system, rose above the sea and, in first concert with human affairs, intervened.

  • Thin Air
Finding, again, imprinted memory and cunning not his own, stealth was abandoned and the engines ignited. He hugged the edge of his own fireball, hiding in its wide spectrum, climbing, not alone, but holding to an old intuition. Then across his path…

  • Dead Stick
Even deadstick, the craft had reached the fallback site, but in clouds, he couldn't see anything. This wasn't good. He was below the higher peaks. And he was entirely alone in his thoughts now--perhaps something of the old warrior didn't want to be party to flying into a mountain. His remaining screen did show an ascending plain just beyond a ridge that must be Resthaven. With only seconds to go, he had to trust to it. The hour's events had all come to this.

Suddenly, some light. The craft broke out of overcast at 300 knots. He saw the ridge sweep by below. Through mist, ahead, a cerulean expanse was rising to meet him, twisted and jumbled.

    "Well, shit."

The controls were still mushy. If the romance of alien tech was over, he hoped at least the nose would come up.
