    In June of 1989, I followed several hiking routes to and through sequoia groves taken years earlier--this time with my Crown Graphic 4x5 camera, three lenses, the necessary camera gear, boxes of 4x5 and 120 film and a small film-change tent, wanting to photograph appealing compositions that I'd been sketching in the past. In a few instances, I photographed some of the same things I'd drawn on newsprint and in small sketchbooks. This photo was the fallen trunk where I'd first found the trail in 1980 when coming over Dennison Ridge fron Dillionwood Grove.

    I visited Garfiedl Grove again in 2023 with the same Crown Graphic to document for myself the effects of the huge wildfire that swept through a year earlier.  The fire had about incinerated Dillionwood Grove--but once crossing Dennison Ridge, it quickly transitioned to a hot ground fire through most of Garfield Grove, most of the sequoia surviving.  The forest floor was much cleared of dogwood, small  conifers and deadfall.  The fallen sequoia in this photograph was nearly burned up, a charred remnant left on a cleared, open slope beside a dry creek.

    Logged sequoia in Windy Gulch Grove along the old logging railroad bed that leads to Evans Grove.  Once a continuous grove, logged portions have separate names. The Hume mill burned down in 1918 and logging ended.  Where the rail bed stops, the surviving sequoia of Evans Grove remain.

A selection of compositional sketches and drawings gathered as a personal project to hike and draw in as many of the sequoia groves in the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada that I could reach, done between 1980 and 1986.  I eventually accumulated 1,000's of sketches and learned some sense of composition in the process--and still fondly recall wandering to these quiet, often little visited places, sleeping night to night in a new grove watching the great trees catch the last day's light and the first light of the next. Perhaps also, I came to feel familiar with some surviving essence of a grand Mesozoic carried into the present.
