Why Patreon                                             https://www.patreon.com/DouglasHenderson

Please consider joining my Patreon page.  The why of it is to set funding aside for the purpose of augmenting the expense of creating and publishing a number of books of personal interests—real books by off-set printing, mostly involving photographs and illustrations in b&w and color.

I’m generally known for my Paleo-art—depictions of ancient flora, fauna and landscapes—work known only because it often found a market. A number of other projects and creative pursuits done over the years in the same single/simple minded approach didn’t find markets at all. Much of this work looks like a hidden career to me now and I would like fashioning some of it into unique, and validating, art/earth history books.

As of August 2025, I have to say what was written in the first paragraph above 5 years ago was my intent at the time--but a pandemic and the terrific cost of conventional off-set book-making has made this sort of self-publishing, along with the idea of warehousing at home tons of books without a distributor, just beyond possible.  I will be proposing a few book ideas to willing publishers--and over time this may or may not be successful.

Also, I've abandoned the original tier rewards due to the rising cost of shipping and time involved in providing multiple prints to dozens of patrons.  Instead, I will mail self-publshed books ordered through Magcloud, signed and doodled in before sending off by USPS media shipping rates.  Future rewards may also include unique items on hand--prints, doodles, books, and DVD movies, in an effort to thin the accumulated treasures over the years.

If and when any of the proposed books come to be, a signed copy will be sent to every paying Patreon supporter (and past supporters).  In the meantime, the Magcloud self-published books of various topics will be sent as rewards once a year. They will be a surprise, at least.

The books I will be proposing to willing publishers, so far, will be:

Yellowstone Through A Pinhole
A collection of black and white (and some color) photographs taken with a variety of pinhole film cameras of landscapes, large and small, in Yellowstone National Park, many depicting its volcanic and glacial history. Some of the images are of popular places and features—but most of the photography was done wandering far from roads on and off trails. This has been a 12 year project now and I want to distill many thousands of photos into a much smaller selection—around 200.  Some of he royalties from this book would go to a conservation group that is cooperatively involved with Yellowstone or to Yellowstone National Park directly.

Yellowstone Landscapes
A collection of large-format B&W photographs taken with 4x5 and 5x7 cameras in the park since 1988.  Again, some of the royalties would go the park or a conservation group involved with Yellowstone National park

A Retrospective of Paleo-art
A book of my artwork done over the last 40 years including finished illustrations, design drawings, outlines, field sketches and some description of a personal approach.  Not being a paleontologist, this would not be a science book, but a book of work my art, process, influences and thinking.
